    LONDON CENTRE

We Are London Centre’s NDP

London is a wonderful city to live, work, play, and raise a family. London Centre, at the heart of London, has had a strong NDP presence that has made its progressive voice. This voice was heard loudly provincially when in the 2018 election the people of London elected three strong MPPs, and specifically in London North Centre MPP: Terence Kernaghan.

Join us in building the NDP in London Centre and working toward electing a federal NDP government. Volunteer, donate, talk to friends and neighbours, and come to our events (See the tabs at the top of the webpage).

London Centre is economically very diverse with strong urban neighbourhoods, from the mixed downtown and university communities to the more suburban areas in the north end of the riding. Everywhere, the citizens of London Centre have pride in their homes, communities, and London.

The London Centre NDP are here to build on and continue the legacy of Canada as a great country, one of the hopes of the world. The local New Democrats are progressive Canadians who believe we can build an even better one—a country that’s more prosperous, sustainable, and where no one is left behind.

Canada’s NDP has a proud history of fighting for ordinary Canadians and delivering results. Over the last 50 years, New Democrats have helped ensure the introduction of universal medical care, public pensions, and the expansion of Canada’s social safety net.

New Democrats are champions for people – not corporations or the ultra-rich. We believe in building a society that is more equal and more just for everybody. We are determined to fight for solutions people urgently need right now. From skyrocketing housing prices to soaring out-of-pocket healthcare costs – Canadians haven’t received the help they need.

We believe in this movement because we know that politics is about people – and that when we work to improve the lives of Canadians, we can build a better Canada where everybody feels included, and can follow their dreams.

2025 London Centre Dirka Prout:

Thank-you!

To my amazing campaign team, supporters, volunteers and donors who put your faith and trust in me, I express my since gratitude. It has been my pleasure to serve as the NDP candidate for London Centre. Our supporters have noted that we brought to light issues and people that other parties neglected. Our volunteers and campaign team convinced over 400 non-voters to vote for us. We gave these people hope.

Hope that a better world is possible. That everyone is valued and that we will be bold and uphold human rights at home and aborad; no matter if at first it is an unpopular position.

Congratulations to Peter Fragiskatos on his victory Monday night. I commend the other contenders for putting their name forward. The strength of our democracy relies on your good faith contributions.

Jagmeet Singh is a genuinely emphathetic and courageous leader who spearheaded an historic and impactful expansion of our healthcare system. I wish him well in his future endeavours and know he will continue to be engaged in making Canada better.

Monday night we didn’t get the results we fought for. The NDP on its own and in allyship with Canada’s social and labour movements will be there fighting for things you need, for a more equitable and inclusive Canada and a sustainable planet. We need a bulwark against capitalism.

We cannot fly without a left wing. We needed a national unity government. You deserve to have something to vote for rather than something or someone to vote against. I and the NDP will continue to advocate for electoral reform so all voices are well represented.

Once again a sincere thank you.

Dirka Prout Biography

Dirka fell in love with London after arrival two decades ago. From the family-friendly recreational and cultural facilities to the cutting-edge research happening across institutions, and the many warm relationships she has developed.

Dirka is a Lead Geotechnical Engineer/Project Manager who holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering. During her 25+ years as a professional engineer, she has contributed to countless provincial and municipal infrastructure projects in southern Ontario, including here in London.

She would like to continue to serve her community by helping to solve London’s housing and homelessness crisis in an equitable and environmentally sustainable way.

From 2022 to 2025, Dirka has served as Chair of the Board of Directors for Unity Project for the Relief of Homelessness in London. She advocates for increased supports for low-income, homeless, and precariously housed Londoners.

From 2005 to 2021, Dirka served as President of the London Chapter of Spelling Bee of Canada, where she promoted youth literacy and helped children hone in on their academic goals and develop perseverance and grit.

Her first volunteer stint in London was as a donation sorter at Women’s Community House (ANOVA), which instilled in her a critical understanding of the presence of gender-based violence in Canada and the urgent measures needed to eradicate it.

As a result of her dedication to the community, Dirka received an Excellence Award for Outstanding service at the 2023 Essence and Culture Awards by the London AfroCentric Community Association.

Dirka lives with her wonderful partner Maurus. Together they enjoy supporting their community and taking long country drives to discover the ghost towns of Ontario. She also enjoys music and dance and plays both box lacrosse and soccer.

As Tommy Douglas said, ‘Courage, my friends; ‘tis not too late to build a better world’. Help build this better world by voting for a fairer, more affordable Canada on election day.

Thank you Jagmeet —
Canadians are better off because of you.

Our leader Jagmeet Singh announced he is stepping down. Under his leadership and with your support, we helped millions of people get dental care, free diabetes medication and birth control, childcare, and antiscab protection. Share your thanks and gratitude for his years of service and inspirational leadership.

Messages from Jagmeet, 2025-04-29:

  • “It’s been the honour of my life to lead the NDP, and to represent the people of Burnaby Central. Congratulations to Prime Minister Carney, and to all the other leaders on a hard-fought campaign. I know this night is disappointing for New Democrats.”
  • “I am disappointed that we could not win more seats. But I am not disappointed in our movement. I am hopeful for our Party. I KNOW that we will always choose hope over fear.”
  • “New Democrats built this country.
“We have built the best of Canada.
    And we aren’t going anywhere.”
  • “But we are only defeated when we believe those that tell us we can never dream of a better Canada. I’ve often spoken of a lesson my mother shared with me: the Sikh teaching of Chardi Kala. It means “rising spirits.” Optimism over struggle. This is the spirit I carry tonight.”

Message from the London Centre Executive

Echoing Jagmeet’s comments the night of the 2025 election, “We are disappointed that we could not win more seats. But we are not disappointed in our movement. We are hopeful for our Party. We KNOW that we will always choose hope over fear.”

To all of the amazing supporters, volunteers and donors who campaigned for London Centre NDP and Dirka Prout, THANK-YOU.

To the members of the London Centre NDP, we also know that there will need to be a lot of rebuilding to do:

  • The NDP federal council has selected veteran NDP MP Don Davies for Vancouver Kingsway as the new interim leader [2025-05-05].
  • Also, the London Centre Riding Association Executive has reached the end of its mandate, and a new team will need to be elected. A General Meeting is being planned. Stay tuned.
  • There will of course be more reviews and reflections on the NDP’s role in Canada in terms of policies and vision during the Leadership contest. Nonetheless, members have already been sharing their thoughts. You may also have ideas you wish to share. Please share your thoughts.
